Cadentia Nova Danica
Saxophonist John Tchicai returned home to Denmark in 1966 after four years in New York and then formed the Cadentia Nova Danica ensemble with young Danish musicians who were already playing together: On this live recording, they all prove themselves worthy as conceptual and creative equals of their most advanced contemporaries in other European countries.

The music they played on this first public appearance radiates passionate honesty and intense humanity. Richard Williams’ liner notes explain: “Although in some respects very characteristic of its era, [the music] communicates its raw and heartfelt beauty across the decades with undimmed strength, still reaching out in hope to an unknown future”. Cadentia Nova Danica’s 1966 concert is a wonderful gem and, finally, no longer a hidden one.

Finn von Eyben plays Finn von Eyben

From a leading exponent of the fertile Danish free jazz movement of the 1960s comes these never before released live and studio recordings pointing back to traditional jazz, swing and bop and forwards to future forms of jazz mixed with folk, funk, soul and rock.

The first half of the record features studio recordings from von Eyben’s “Workshop”, en ensemble that created a free-flowing and spontaneous feel. The musicians were trained classical musicians and composers, and this foundation of skill ensures an uncompromised high quality of play and a basis from which they can improvise masterfully. The second half of CD is a recording of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation’s “Radiojazzgruppen” playing compositions by Finn von Eyben. Von Eyben himself is featured on bass and accompanied by Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen.

Cry!
Last, but not least: Check out the brand new record Cry! by Karsten Vogel and Per Aage Brandt!
In the year of the 50th anniversary of Per Aage Brandt and Karsten Vogel’s joint record debut in 1966, ten freshly recorded pieces of music are issued on Storyville Records. They represent Danish avant-garde jazz in its original form. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Per Aage Brandt and Karsten Vogel were high profile musicians in the avant-garde jazz environment that ha found a growth centre in Copenhagen, a movement whose likes were only found and practiced in New York at the time.

The outcome of their resumed collaboration is 50 minutes of ecstatic jazz, beautiful passages and lots of original piano, convincing saxophone and an iconic style frame.
